Motorola is full of surprises lately and, after rolling out the uber-cheap Moto G stateside earlier than expected, it’s also delivering a precocious Android 4.4 KitKat update for the budget-conscious powerhouse.
The software bump comes mere weeks after the higher-end Moto X made the 4.4 leap of faith on all four major American carriers, and what’s truly incredible is it lands before most top-shelf devices from competing OEMs can score the chocolaty treat.
The times, they are a-changin’, folks, so you better get with the (new) program if you don’t want to be left behind. Sure, the LG G2, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or Sony Xperia Z1 are spectacular hardware-wise, but what good does that do when they cost a fortune, “rock” ugly UIs on top of pure, vanilla Android and can get pwned by a modest little fellow like the G?
Now granted, some things never change, and so not even Motorola Google can snap its fingers and upgrade a handheld to the latest and greatest Android version for everyone all at once. Thus, the 4.4.2 OTA is making its way first to US buyers via Motorola.com and Amazon, with the rest of the world said to follow “soon”.
Interestingly, a number of European Moto G owners are reporting “suspicious” activity on their gizmos, so all in all, Big G may well pull the worldwide update trick by the end of the year. Now wouldn’t that be something?
Next step, US carrier availability, albeit odds are no wireless service provider will offer the 4.5-incher with subsidies. It’s almost too cheap off-contract, starting at $180, so there’s no point.
The 4.4.2 Moto G changelog is quite hefty and can be consulted in full here, however if you want a quick rundown, it goes like this: everything’s better, smoother, zippier. The camera, UI, SMS/MMS support, possibly the battery life, eve-ry-thing. Way to bring the holiday spirit to town, Moto.
